The history of the Snowy River is rich and varied. Paddle steamers and ketches carried local produce from Orbost to Melbourne.
Settlements came and went but Orbost remains on the banks of the river adjacent to some of the richest alluvial soils in the world.
The surrounding forest and farmland have provided employment for generations.
Rare flora and fauna can be found in the nearby National and Coastal Parks and surrounding forests. Some of the more commonly sighted animals include lyrebirds, eastern water dragons, goannas and possums
